The first girls soccer game of the season for the Rivals was cancelled last Thursday, after the opposing school had a COVID outbreak.
Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma had to cancel the soccer match with the combined Port Townsend-Chimacum squad after there was an outbreak of coronavirus cases at the private school.
The Rivals played their first game of the season on Monday, Sept. 13, losing 8-1 to Klahowya High School in Silverdale.
“Klahowya are always the best team in the region and it’s difficult to compete with them, but we want to just play positively and not worry about the result,” said Rivals Coach Robert Cantley.
“We are looking to finish in the top half of the league this year with the young talent we have,” Cantley added.
The result of the matchup wasn’t unexpected for Cantley, but the lack of match experience for a young team is what undid the soccer team in the end.
“Three girls — Kay Botkin, Calia Corden, and Mi Amada Lanphear-Ramirez —started their first-ever high school game, and senior Savanna Hoffman played in goal, despite never having played in that position before,” Cantley said.
After a tough first half, going down 5-0, the girls played better and found more success on the offensive side, with sophomore Ava Shiflett scoring a goal.
