Get entwined in a web of musical theater

Key City Public Theatre’s 2016 stage management apprentice Emily Kathryn Hand is using her mastery of musicals to create a cabaret of musical-theater title songs in a piece titled “Caught in the Web,” which debuts Thursday, May 4 at the theater, followed by an Arts to Elders performance on Tuesday, May 9.

“I started putting it together last summer as an idea,” said Hand. “I went through a lot of musicals to figure out what musicals have title songs and arranged [those songs] in an order that would have a story line.” For the show she created, it’s a love story.

Every year, the theater sends its stage management apprentice off with a farewell and an opportunity to use the skills they have refined during their apprenticeship on the stage. Hand, who has a degree in musical theater performance but also discovered a love for technical theater and stage management work, has been working backstage at the theater since “Shipwrecked! An Entertainment.” Next, she’s off to be an assistant stage manager at Skyline Theatre Company in New Jersey.

She is joined on stage by Austin Krieg, Miranda McClave and Joey Ripley, young local actors whom Hand helped mentor during her apprenticeship. “Caught in the Web” includes songs from Broadway classics “Rent,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and “Hair.”
