Fred Schubert, of Chimacum, died peacefully at his home on Sunday December 8th 2024. He was born on July 7th 1940 in Miami, OK, the third of Werner G and Geneva Kelly Schubert's five children. He grew up in Burlington WA. After graduation from High School he enlisted in the Air Force, receiving schooling in the still young field of electronics. He served in Germany and in South Carolina as an Electronic Counter Measures Technician during the height of the cold war. He began his long distinguished Civil Service career in 1967, going to work for the Dept of the Navy at Naval Underwater Warfare Engineering Station, Keyport, in time becoming Special Operations Test Director.
Fred married his high school sweetheart, Jean Chesley on March 28, 1959. They raised their four children in Bremerton, WA. In 1996 Fred and Jean, now empty nesters, moved to their beloved little acreage overlooking Chimacum Valley, where kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids love to gather.
Well known for his knowledge and hands-on skills across a broad range, Fred was deliberate and precise, and generously shared his wisdom and skills. Jean gave him a cap, which he dearly loved, that says, "That's what I do — I fix things and I know stuff"
He was, and is, much loved by family, friends, neighbors, former co-workers, and most recently by his Hospice Team. Much could be said about the quality and quiet character of his life, and many stories told about his varied work and play ventures, among them hunting, fishing, camping, ham radio, team shooting, puzzle master, all things technical, and master mechanic. His love for his dogs and his dedicated mowing of a large field of weeds in perfect diagonals are legendary.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Daren R and Bruce D Schubert. He is survived by his wife and companion of 65 years, Jean; his daughters Lorraine Schubert and Karen Schubert Dorman (Brian); daughters-in-law Amy Schubert (Daren) and Debbie Schubert (Bruce); grandchildren Bryce (Alisha) Schubert, Mercedes and Christian Schubert and great-grandchildren Benjamin and Noah Schubert, the latest generation to play in the field and explore the woods.
Fred was a member of Peace Lutheran Fellowship in Port Ludlow. A Memorial Service will be held at The Beach Club, 121 Marina View Dr, in Port Ludlow on Sunday January 19th at 1:00 PM.
