Port Townsend Film Festival’s executive director Janette Force has announced her forthcoming retirement.

Taking over in 2011 after the loss of executive director Peter Simpson, Force facilitated 11 years of growth within the organization.

Along with bringing the film festival into the virtual sphere when the pandemic hit, her leadership welcomed two distinct new eras for the fest.

First came the expansion of PTFF events to include two annual film festivals with diverse and engaging programming, the “Filmmaker-in-Residence” program, “PTFF Road Show” and “First Tuesday Salon.”

Then came the transition to virtual events. The organization now brings film to the community year-round with the monthly online screening event “PTFF Pics.”

Throughout her years of service, Force advanced the organization forward – toward greater financial stability and long-term viability.

In a newsletter to the public, Force spoke of her plans for the future.

“Following our September festival, I will be stepping into long days of frolic with my grandchildren and continuing to play the guitar poorly. A girl must be realistic, after all,” she wrote.

“Thank you to all of you who’ve supported, advised, worked and laughed with me on this unforgettable journey. While I look forward to spending more time with my family, I also await running into you again at the Outdoor Theatre on Taylor St. or elsewhere around town. I’ll even dare to dream of being able to share a hug!”

PTFF will be hosting a public “Toast to the Future!” virtual fundraiser and happy hour at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 18.
