The community of Nordland on Marrowstone Island has an event coming up that we think would be of interest to your readers. We just completed a project to replace the old, wind-damaged sign at the island’s historical cemetery with funds from the State of Washington through its Department of Archeological and Historical Preservation. The cemetery was established in 1895 for the use of island residents and has been in continuous use since. It is a non-profit, non-endowed cemetery owned by the Marrowstone Island Community Association. Sound View is the resting place of 90 Veterans from all branches of the military. We are having a short dedication on Wednesday, November 20 at 1 p.m. at the cemetery with remarks about the history of the cemetery and this project.

Brief Overview: In the Winter of 2022 a strong wind storm blew down the existing wooden sign which had been in place since 1938 and was a victim of rotting support timbers as well as the wind. One of our members became aware of grant funds available from the State for the preservation of historical barns, theatres, and cemeteries. We applied for a grant to replace our sign with one looking as similar as possible with up-to-date materials and footings to ensure it stands for many years to come. Approval for the project came through late in 2023 and the sign was installed October 25 in a location closer to the road than its previous location to help make it more visible.
