Mary O’Shaughnessy and husband Charlie Van Gilder, both artists, left Chicago in 2014 to move to Port Townsend, where Van Gilder lived in the late 1970s.
In 2021, O’Shaughnessy expanded her local art studio and created a public-facing gallery space. The couple’s Aurora Loop Gallery quickly gained a dedicated following for showing creative work from Olympic Peninsula artists.
Theirs is one of more than 15 venues opening up for Port Townsend’s monthly Art Walk on Saturday, July 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. Fine art galleries, artisan craft spaces, and alternative spaces present displays, meet-and-greet sessions, and demonstrations throughout the evening.
At Bazaar Girls crafting community on Washington Street, they’re celebrating summer during Art Walk with bouquets of flowers in many mediums: Fresh and pressed flowers, metal flower sculptures, flower oil paintings, and more. Artists Carolyn Doe, Marji Scott, and Mike Biskup will showcase their art alongside the watercolors of Joan Sandford. Visitors can even build their own bouquet with Amy Ockerlander of Forest Elf Farm.
Bazaar Girls co-founder Kerri Hartman said Sandford’s work is widely reproduced on a variety of home goods. “She’s had a very successful career,” Hartman said. “If you ever bought stationary with a cottage garden scene on it, possibly Joan painted it.”
Artists Carolyn Doe, Marji Scott, Leslie Dickinson, and Mike Biskup will showcase their art alongside the watercolors of Sandford.
Enjoy a walk through town as you visit participating venues and discover a kaleidoscope of local arts. Walkers can further get into the spirit with an artist-led monthly fashion theme. For July, Art Walk patrons are encouraged to participate by wearing their sparkliest ensembles, a concept courtesy of the team at Grover Gallery.
