A recreational trailer parked in the 100 block of West Price Street in Port Hadlock was destroyed by explosion and fire late Thursday morning, April 14. There were no injuries, according to East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR).
Neighbors as far as three blocks away called 911 after they were shaken by a large explosion. EJFR was dispatched to the fire at 11:46 a.m., and arrived to find a 25-foot Fireball fifth-wheel RV fully engulfed in flames. The fire was declared extinguished at 12:06 p.m. by EJFR Assistant Chief Brian Tracer.
According to EJFR, the occupant of the RV stated that he had been inside all morning, and had just left the vehicle to obtain some sandpaper from a nearby garage for a project. During the few minutes he was away, the RV explosion occurred.
The occupant stated that the stove was not on, nor were there any heating devices in the vehicle, according to EJFR.
The owner of the RV, who lived nearby, told firefighters that it was uninsured.
The American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the now homeless man, who also lost all of his possessions.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Firefighters from Quilcene Fire Rescue, Naval Magazine Indian Island and Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue assisted.
