A possible fire on Taylor Street in downtown Port Townsend prompted a mass response by local authorities, including police and firefighters, at lunchtime Thursday.
According to East Jefferson Fire Rescue, a commercial fire alarm was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Thursday, July 30, after smoke was seen coming from the roof of a restaurant on Taylor Street.
Responders quickly ascertained, however, there was no fire.
It was, according to department spokeswoman Phyllis Leah Speser, “a good intention call.”
Likely, she said, the smoke was caused by the initial firing up of pizza ovens within the eatery, though it wasn't certain as the smoke dissipated quickly.
A thorough and careful check of the surrounding shops and adjacent buildings was done. No damage was discovered.
Units from Naval Magazine Indian Island were among the responders, Speser said, and other agencies were en route but told not to come when the true nature of the incident was discovered.
The scene was cleared by 12:56 p.m.
