Federal fine for Kirkland Life Care Center

The Washington state nursing home where the first recorded outbreak of COVID-19 occurred in the U.S. is facing more than $600,000 in federal fines as a result of their handling of the outbreak.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services say Kirkland Life Care Center failed to report the outbreak to local authorities promptly and failed to provide adequate care to their patients during the outbreak. Reports show more than two weeks passed between when residents began displaying symptoms and when King County authorities were notified of any problem.

One hundred twenty-nine cases of the respiratory illness have been confirmed among staff, visitors and guests at the facility, resulting in 37 deaths.

If the facility “does not correct all deficiencies and return to full compliance by Sept. 16, 2020,” they will lose out on inclusion in the Medicare/Medicaid program and will be required to repay any federal payment for patients admitted from March 21 to March 27.

A per-day fine of $13,585 is being sought from the beginning of the outbreak between Feb. 12 to March 27.
