Amelia R. Watkins, 83, of Port Ludlow faces possible charges after she failed to yield while driving on State Route 19 on Dec. 28 and collided with a vehicle being driven by Donald J. Hein of Sequim, according to the Washington State Patrol (WSP).

Hein, 76, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the accident at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 28. A spokeswoman for Harborview said Hein was released on Dec. 29.

Watkins was not injured, nor was Marta Baird, 66, of Port Ludlow, a passenger in Watkins’ car, according to the WSP.

Watkins was driving a 2014 Kia Cadenza heading toward State Route 104 and Hein was driving eastbound on SR 104 when Watkins pulled out into the lane of travel on 104 instead of using the merge lane, and struck Hein, who was driving a 2014 Subaru Forester, according to the WSP. Both vehicles were damaged; they were towed from the scene.

Watkins and Baird were wearing seat belts, the WSP reported. It was not known whether Hein was wearing a seat belt.

The eastbound lanes of SR 104 at the intersection of SR 19 were blocked for approximately three hours, according to the WSP.

Alcohol was not considered a factor in the accident. The WSP trooper investigating the incident is recommending Watkins be cited with negligent driving for failing to yield, according to a report.
