Facebook Keeps Me Connected

Posted

I admit it. I click on Facebook daily. More than once a day, really.  It’s my go-to place to see photos of what friends and relatives are doing, who’s got a gripe against the world, who loves their grandchildren and pets the best, who is traveling, and who is looking for a solution to a problem.  More often then not, it’s my link to the outside world to share my pictures and thoughts too. I used to be an avid letter-writer but email and Facebook has replaced my favorite way to communicate. There’s always a lot I have to scoot past quickly—most of it related to our beloved buffoon president. I do stop on the cartoons about him, however; and save them to My Photos to enjoy again. When he first got elected, I started a scrapbook on him intending to keep political cartoons, stories, and commentaries.  It didn’t take long for me to realize I could never keep up with the deluge. I quit collecting although I still keep a lot of the cartoons.

I cancelled my cable TV service a few months back when I found myself in a constant state of agitation with all the around-the-clock coverage of every stupid thing that came out of his mouth.  Now I use Amazon Prime, Netflix, and off-and-on subscriptions to HBO, Hulu, and Showtime. This seems to suit my viewing preferences better although it can be a chore to find anything worth watching as most shows are aimed at a younger audience, and those keen to watch people “doing it” or walking around in a state of undress most of the time.  I’m past all that but I do enjoy a good murder mystery and almost all mafia shows.  I guess the only thing I really miss is football, baseball, golf, and Wheel of Fortune. Oh, and PBS.

Facebook is full of interesting facts but I’ve had to force myself to not stop on those posts asking if I have this symptom or that symptom indicating cancer, a stroke on the way, heart disease, or any number of other ailments that we need to see our doctor for right away.  I ALWAYS seem to have most of the symptoms and then I have to Google it more.  Vicious circle.

Sometimes you can find interesting tips for whatever is plaguing you.  Last week, for example, I read that eating 10 raisins before going to bed will help cut down on the nighttime bathroom trips.  I intend to give that a try as “john” interrupts my sleep entirely too much from midnight to 6 a.m.

I’ve got HBO right now but only for a month. I figure I’ll be done watching everything I want to see by then. I’ve tried more than once to get into Game of Thrones but it’s  just a little too much blood and guts for my liking. And I can barely keep track of who belongs to who. I know I’m in the minority on not caring for this show but that’s okay.  I know what I like. I’ve watched all the seasons of The Sopranos three times! And I’ll watch it again as I bought the series.  A few nights ago I found a two-hour program about the filming of The Sopranos in New York and New Jersey, and how the fans came out in droves at every location.  All the stars welcomed them by posing for pics and signing autographs.  That particular program was fascinating to watch.

Last night I came across this show on HBO called Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.  He pretty much spends a half hour talking non-stop about how stupid Trump is – and proving it! I REALLY liked his show and I may even keep HBO a little longer so I can go back and see everything he’s talked about.

HBO featured a 3-hour show about the latest inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. I recognized most of the names but wasn’t familiar with their music except for two, and these two were the only ones whose music I might be inclined to buy—Joan Baez and Journey. The opening of the show was a dedication to Chuck Berry and that was excellent.  They said he was the first one to be inducted back in 1986 but actually the first were Chuck, Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and the Everly Brothers.  I know ALL THOSE GUYS! Know them well.

I told myself that not having regular TV would help me get back to reading more. And it has.  I just finished reading Cravenstone: Time Enhancers by Dage Corvish.  Normally, I might not be that interested in a sci-fi  but this one was special.  It had a sci-fi theme (in a way) but was more than that.  Had to do with sex traffickers, Sasquatch, crows and ravens, Indian history, and best of all, I know the author well.  He’s my little brother, Dana.  I knew he had been working on his book for a long time but I had no idea until I got an email from him that his first novel was now available on Amazon and in kindle form.  Kind of annoyed me that he didn’t use his own name but he had his reasons, I suppose. I figured out right away that Dage (rhymes with wage) was for Dana Gene but the Corvish part had me puzzled. He said it had something to do with the Latin translation for Crows. (corvid)  I loved seeing local locations worked into his chapters and it was interesting to see what names he used that I recognized. Cravenstone supposedly takes place on Marrowstone.  He probably won’t appreciate me blogging about it but I’m proud of him and I really liked his book.  You should check it out.

The picture I posted today is one I took near the boat haven a few years ago showing Dana, his wife, Lill, and our cousin, Dale.  I always thought Dana looked like an author in this shot. And now he is.
