With the tragic wildfires in California in the news, it is a good time to look at our situation here in Port Townsend. A dry summer fire in the woods of the North Beach area, or Morgan Hill, or our town jewel of Fort Worden would be devastating. Now is the time to prepare for next summer.
There is Firewise information for preparing your home available from the state Department of Natural Resources at www.dnr.wa.gov/firewise. Local emergency offices also have information at www.co.jefferson.wa.us/1067/Preparedness-Planning.
Prepare your home and lot. Buy great renters or homeowners insurance. Have a grab-and-go kit of irreplaceable items of sentimental value to you as well as emergency supplies for yourself and your pets. Be prepared to get emergency warnings from Jefferson County at www.co.jefferson.wa.us/1066/Alerts-Warnings.
Keep in mind the old trite-but-true saying: Failing to plan is planning to fail. Plan ahead for the safety of yourself, your pets and your neighbors.
