East Jefferson Wrestling Rivals has continued at a frantic pace.

For the third weekend in a row, more than 20 local athletes competed in two competitions in northwest Washington. On Friday, Jan. 3, six EJ wrestlers (four boys and two girls) entered the Gut Check Wrestling Tournament, which featured wrestlers from more than 100 schools in Washington, Canada, Hawaii and Oregon. The two-day event featured more than 1,000 highly competitive wrestlers.

On the girls’ side, Gracee Liskee qualified for day two and competed in the 120-pound weight class with 33 other girls in her bracket. For her tournament, she battled in six matches. She won four of them against stiff competition.

On the boys’ side, three EJ athletes qualified for day two of the competition. Manaseh Ramirez battled in five matches in the 150-pound division and won three.

Grady White competed in the 157-pound division and also won three matches. Grady had 50 other competitors in his bracket, which was similar to all the boys’ brackets. Mason Iverson competed in the 215-pound division and wrestled four matches, winning two.

While a handful of our wrestlers were engaged in day two of Gut Check at the ShoWare Center in Kent, over a dozen athletes represented the county at the Annual Battle of the Axe Team Tournament in Port Angeles. In that competition, the girls were grouped into two- to four-person groups, according to weight. The top scorer for the EJ Rivals Girls team was Savvy Grimm, with a second place finish in the 109-pound division. Lenore Geelan and Ursula Schmidt both won matches as well.

The boys’ side was a Team Tournament, and our EJ Varsity team wrestled 5 dual matches through the day, winning two. “We had to forfeit four weight classes at this team tournament due to the holidays, but we did muster nearly a dozen boys to compete at this event, which was a win,” said Coach Jim Wilcox. Silas Klontz won the most matches for EJ, with four victories over the day. The EJ Rivals Team defeated Kingston and an all-star team made up of extras from other teams.

The next wrestling match, set for Jan. 7, after press time, will be an away Dual League Match with Cascade Christian.
