EJ Rivals fall to Klahowya Eagles on Senior Night

The East Jefferson Rivals girls basketball team lost their Senior Night game Friday against the Klahowya High Eagles in a one-sided affair.

The Eagles dismantled East Jefferson in a 70-26 blowout victory Feb. 4.

After tipoff, Klahowya quickly started draining shots over the Rivals.

East Jefferson didn’t seem to have an answer to the offensive attack and defensive strength of the Eagles. The Eagles towered over EJ with a 21-5 lead at the end of the first period.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Rivals couldn’t find their usual offensive output from Alyssa Vandenberg, Aurin Asbell, and Kay Botkin. Klahowya tacked on another 17 points while EJ managed five, leaving the score at 38-10 at half.

The Rivals found a little more success on offensive in the third, but it was too little too late. The Eagles led 57-20 as the fourth period came around.

The Rivals held Klahowya’s offense down with slightly more success in the final quarter, but couldn’t make enough shots to tread water with the Eagles. Halfway through the fourth, Rivals Coach Lorraine Rimson of the Rivals was ejected from the game after having a verbal confrontation with the officiating crew.

In the end, the Eagles handily defeated EJ with a final score of 70-26.

Vandenberg led in scoring for East Jefferson, netting nine points. Freshman Juliette O’Hara followed with eight points, and Aurin Asbell ended with six.

The Rivals next game was on Feb. 7, when they faced Life Christian Academy at home in Port Townsend, losing 43-21.
