The East Jefferson track and field team opened the season with a jamboree at Kingston High and the EJ girls dominated in the shot put, 1600-meter race and several throwing events.
The opener was Saturday, March 20 and was a shortened meet, as both EJ and Kingston were not able to field full teams due to eligibility requirements.
The meet started with the field events on a day shadowed by cool, damp conditions.
East Jefferson junior Tusker Behrenfeld won the shot put with a personal best throw of 31-1.5.
Behrenfeld also placed second in the javelin with a throw of 135-8, followed by East Jefferson freshman Reid Martin in third place (88-6).
EJ claimed the top three spots in the girls shot put with senior Gina Brown in first with a throw of 29-10.
Junior Ava Vaughan-Mifsud was second, putting the shot at 25-2, and sophomore Melody Douglas placed third with 22-6.5”.
Vaughan-Mifsud also took second in the javelin for EJ with a throw of 52-8.
In the jumps, freshman Indigo Gould of East Jefferson was second in the boys long jump with an 11-4 effort.
On the girls side, junior Aurin Asbell won the long jump in 13-0. Fellow EJ junior Lia Poore placed third with a jump of 10-9.
Asbell and Poore went one-two in the triple jump with respective jumps of 29-5.5 and 27-0.
Junior Jerome Reaux of East Jefferson (EJ) beat feet to first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.5 seconds to open the track events for the season.
EJ freshmen Addy Asbell (EJ) followed in 14.6 seconds in the 100-meter.
The EJ boys and girls each had several competitors in the 1600-meter.
Junior Max Allworth-Miles finished second in a time of 4:53.9, while sophomore Sebastian Manza was third in 5:10.0. Junior Ben Martin placed ninth in 6:16.9.
The EJ girls raced to first, second, and fourth places with sophomore Camryn Hines winning in 6:02.4, followed by freshmen Aliyah Yearian (6:03.9) and Tadu Dollarhide (6:46.3).
EJ closed out the meet with big wins in the 4x400-meter relay which was won by both the boys (Reaux, Manza, R. Martin, Allworth-Miles in 4:05.2) and girls teams (Addy Asbell, Hines, Yearian, Dollarhide in 5:07.9).
