EJ girls blown out by Cascade Christian; basketball team loses seventh straight

The East Jefferson girls basketball team’s season continued Thursday with another tough test: a matchup versus the Cascade Christian Cougars at home.

EJ’s winless streak continued after a decisive 59-24 loss to the Cougars. Though the Rivals hustled and fought throughout, turnovers and lackluster defense in the second half quelled any hopes of snapping the string of losses.

The Rivals’ struggles started in the first half as their offense couldn’t find any momentum to meet Cascade Christian’s offensive pace. The girls only scored one point at the end of the first (from the free-throw line) while the Cougars capitalized on the situation to find a manageable lead of 15 points.

Momentum shifted in the second period as EJ’s offense found their footing to outscore the Cougars 10-8. Cascade Christian maintained their advantage with a scoreline of 23-11 at the half.

The Rivals’ hopes of mounting the comeback were shattered in the third period. The Cougars clawed through EJ with great offensive plays from the get-go, dropping in 18 points to fatten their comfortable cushion.

Offensive woes continued for the girls in the form of turnovers and missed shots. The scoreboard read 41-15 in favor of the Cougars with the game practically finished.

The fourth quarter was more of the same as Cascade Christian comfortably cruised to another win.

Junior Alyssa Vandenberg led the Rivals in scoring with 14 points, while junior Madison Harris followed with three points on the night.

EJ’s next opponent is Life Christian Academy at home in Chimacum Jan. 18.
