Education: Students graduate, earn scholarships

Students from Jefferson County are graduating from colleges, earning high honors and traveling the world. The following is an incomplete list of local graduates who are pursuing higher education. Celeste Bennett of Chimacum in February received the H.W. Wilson Foundation Scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas.

Brian DeDominick of Chimacum and Megan Tennesen of Port Townsend graduated from Gonzaga University and participated in the commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 7 at Spokane’s Veterans Memorial Arena. Each student has either completed their undergraduate degree or are expected to complete their degree requirements this year.

Eric Hartz of Nordland and Shannon McIntire of Port Townsend were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, which is the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, according to a press release. Hartz was initiated at Central Washington University, and McIntire was initiated at Northern Arizona University. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Averi Richert of Port Townsend graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on May 24. Richert graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, and has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. She is to be stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas, where she is to begin intelligence officer training. Richert, the daughter of L.D. and Julie Richert, is a graduate of the Port Townsend High School Class of 2012.

Kristin Carver of Port Ludlow recently graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Rinnah Becker of Port Townsend graduated summa cum laude with a degree in music and Spanish from Minnesota’s St. Olaf College in May. Becker is the daughter of Paul Becker and Lisa Crosby.

Six Jefferson County residents received their degrees from Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah, in February. Raychel Hug of Chimacum has received a Master of Science in nursing leadership and management; Kim Thacker of Chimacum, a Master of Science in nursing education; Raychel Hug of Chimacum, a Master of Science in nursing leadership and management; Katelyn Becker of Port Ludlow, a Master of Science in curriculum and instruction; Kathleen Jeromchek of Port Ludlow, a Bachelor of Science in business management; and Kimberly Jons of Port Townsend, a Bachelor of Science in marketing management.

Nakaia Eliza Macomber-Millman of Port Townsend has graduated magna cum laude from Lewis & Clark College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a double major in psychology and French studies. She was also initiated into the Psi Chi National Psychology Honors Society. While Macomber-Millman attended Lewis & Clark, her activities included sitting on the student academic affairs board; tutoring French students; teaching at a French immersion school for infants through pre-K students; and playing on the Women’s Ultimate team. In addition, she was a teaching assistant for Janet Davidson, a professor of developmental psychology, and studied abroad at the University of Strasbourg, in France. After graduation, Macomber-Millman plans to move to the Bordeaux region of France and work through the Teaching Abroad Program as a teaching assistant for elementary school students learning English. A 2013 graduate of Port Townsend High School, Macomber-Millman is the daughter of Evan Millman and Katherine Macomber-Millman.

Chimacum High School Pi Program graduate Amelia Rose Brummel on May 25 graduated magna cum laude from Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) with an international honors program Bachelor of Arts degree, with a political science major and an anthropology minor. Brummel is to be taking a gap year to pursue internships and volunteer opportunities, and then plans to apply to law schools with the goal of becoming a public-service attorney focusing on international human rights. As part of PLU’s honors program, Brummel completed a semester of study at the University of Oxford in England. Later, she participated in a second study-away program, spending a month in Washington, D.C., at the time of the presidential inauguration, and participated in the historic Women’s March. While at PLU, Brummel was a presidential scholar, emerging leader, mass media copy editor/journalist, residence council social justice director, ASPLU senator, middle school volunteer tutor, Elect Her leadership participant, and member of the debate team and of a dance ensemble.
