A wildland fire near Aldrich Road by the Discovery Bay Golf Course was extinguished Monday morning by firefighters from East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

A person walking a dog spotted the fire and called 911.

Officials with East Jefferson Fire Rescue said responding units found a 30-by-30-foot-wide fire in a wooded area along the road just after 10 a.m. Labor Day.

A fire engine from Naval Magazine Indian Island was also called to the scene.

Firefighters extinguished the fire using water foam. They also cut a line around the area of the blaze and cleared brush to prevent any potential of spreading.

Using a thermal imager, firefighters determined no heat sources remained before declaring the blaze extinguished.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

East Jefferson Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Chief Brian Trace praised the unidentified responding party who called 911: “Our community is a critical part of our fire prevention and firefighting."

"So far today we have responded to two wildland fires; this one and a smaller one in the Kala Point area," Trace added. "Given the extremely dry conditions here, extra vigilance when handling anything burning is call for. That is the best way to prevent grass, brush and forest fires."

"If you do see a fire, promptly calling 911 means we can get to that fire to contain and extinguish it as quickly as possible," he said. "Getting there while it is still small is obviously preferred.”
