East Jefferson Cross Country hosted Port Angeles at the Port Townsend Golf Course for their first home meet of the season last Wednesday.
The East Jefferson team — a combined squad of Port Townsend and Chimacum high runners — challenged the Roughriders in a 2-mile race in the Feb. 17 opener.
The East Jeff boys team came up slightly short, while the girls team handily outpaced the Roughriders.
PT junior Max Allworth-Miles placed first, beating Jack Gladfelter of Port Angeles by one second with a winning time of 10:52.8.
PT sophomore Sebastian Manza was the team’s second finisher in a time of 11:44.7. Manza placed sixth overall.
In 20th place overall was PT freshman Indigo Gould with a time of 16:00.7.
Overall, the East Jefferson boys team placed second to the Roughriders.
The East Jefferson girls topped PA by winning six of the top nine spots.
Roughrider senior Lauren Larson won the race with a time of 12:02.0.
The second-place finisher was East Jefferson freshman Fiona Fraser in a time of 14:16.7.
Freshman Syvlia Butterfield and junior Lia Poore were the next local finishers, taking fifth and sixth places, with times of 16:56.5 and 17:08.4 respectively.
Senior Gina Brown placed seventh (18:24.6), while sophomore Sophia Lumsdane was eighth (19:23.7) and sophomore Riley Gravener followed in ninth place (20:00.6).
Alice Fraser, head cross country coach for PTHS, expected the girls team to be stronger at the next meet when two athletes who were unable to compete against PA return to competition.
