Earl Edward Boroughf passed away in Port Townsend, Washington on Sept. 7, 2021. He was 87.

Earl was born to Earl and Margaret Boroughf on July 4, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio. The family moved to Southern California, where Earl attended Redondo High School and became an accomplished trumpet player and cross country runner. He attended Long Beach State and Chapman College, studying music and engineering.

Earl met Judy Crain at Chapman College and they were married in 1956. She was the light of his life. They moved to Costa Mesa, and had a daughter Dani, and a son Mark. Earl enjoyed playing baseball during these years and being close to family. Earl, Judy and kids moved to Kirkland, Washington in the 1960s, where he was a swim team parent, played basketball with his friends, and was active in the local bridge club with Judy. Earl and Judy moved back to California 12 years later and both enjoyed being involved with the local performance venue and sailing in Newport Harbor. In 2002 they retired in Port Townsend, near Judy’s sister and brother-in-law. He continued to volunteer with the local music venue and did some beautiful woodworking. He contributed his trumpet-playing expertise to the Port Townsend Summer Band and was president of his homeowners association.

Earl was a draftsman/engineer, salesman, and more during his career. He enjoyed being an extra on TV and films. He painted many seascapes which remain in the family. But his biggest passion was always jazz. Earl performed with many jazz bands and community bands throughout his life. Earl was also an avid golfer and has many golf buddies far and wide. He also loved to sail, and appreciated the wonderful sailboats always on display around Port Townsend.

Earl was passionate about family and was a devoted husband for 63 years, and a loving father, grandpa, and great-grandpa.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy, his wife Judy, and Judy’s sister- and brother-in-law Nancy and Herb Payson. He is survived by his son and daughter, Mark and Dani (John); his grandchildren Theresa (Chris); Jim (Sheryl); and Billy; great-grandson Johnny; and two great-granddaughters, soon to be born. He also leaves behind myriads of friends far and wide, most recently those in Port Townsend at Towne Point, Discovery View, Port Townsend Golf Club, the Centrum, Port Townsend Summer Band, the Bayview Restaurant, and Shanghai Chinese. We will all miss him dearly.

Donations in memory of Earl can be made to The Centrum (PO Box 1158, Port Townsend, WA 98368), The Port Townsend Summer Band (PO Box 424, Port Townsend, WA 98368), or the Port Townsend Golf Club (1948 Blaine St, Port Townsend, WA 98368).

A celebration of life for both Earl and his wife Judy will be scheduled at a future date.
