DUI-focused patrols underway

Extra patrols are to be on the roads statewide through Sept. 4 with officers looking for drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In Jefferson and Clallam counties, the Port Townsend, Port Angeles and Sequim police departments, the Jefferson and Clallam county sheriff’s offices, and the Washington State Patrol are to be patrolling the roadways in search of impaired drivers, according to a press release from the Washington State Traffic Commission.

Officials say that an average of 149 people die in traffic crashes in Washington each summer, making summer the deadliest season of the year on state roads.

In 2016, impaired drivers were involved in crashes that resulted in 277 deaths and 371 serious injuries, according to the commission.

The extra patrols are part of Target Zero, which is an effort to end traffic deaths and serious injuries in Washington by 2030.
