Drafting to first place: PT runner is champ

A Port Townsend High School runner won first place at the Class 1A/2A Olympic League Cross Country Championships on Oct. 24. Varsity runner Nathan Cantrell held a steady pace throughout the 5-kilometer race held at the Port Townsend golf course. He ran just behind the leader of the pack until the final moment, when he took off during a downhill kick to the finish line. He finished with a time of 16:20.33. At the Olympic League match, Port Townsend was racing against Bremerton, Kingston, Klahowya, North Kitsap, North Mason, Olympic, Port Angeles and Sequim teams. Other Port Townsend finishers included Kincaid Gould who finished in 11th place and Max Allworth-Miles was 29th. In the girls race, Anika Avelino finished in 6th place, Rachel Matthes was 7th and Camryn Hines was 15th. In the Junior Varsity meet, Haven McMillen was 39th, Michael Petta was 57th and Ashton Meyer-Bibbons was 59th.
