Dorothy N. Kemp passed peacefully after a short decline on August 10, 2019, at Victoria Place in Port Townsend. She grew up in Los Angeles and spent most of her life in the SF Bay Area until she moved to Port Townsend four years ago. She earned a BS degree in chemistry at UCLA, worked at the Shell Oil library as a translator of German scientific documents, and then married Jacob D. Kemp, who worked as a chemist at Chevron. Jake and Dottie had three children: Kindy, Sofia, and Dana, all of whom live in Port Townsend.

Dottie was extremely fond of music and for a number of years managed a Dixieland band featuring her son Dana in the Bay Area. She also enjoyed folk dancing and was a member of Berkeley Folk Dancers for more than sixty years. In addition to sewing dresses and blouses for her daughters when they were children and knitting sweaters for everyone in the family, Dottie was also an avid gardener. In her nineties, Dottie took up the violin, studying fiddle tunes up until the last few weeks of her life. She is survived by two younger brothers in Idaho, her three children, and two grandchildren, Theo and Nico Prins.
