Dear Editor:
I have canceled my subscription to The Leader because of the lack of coverage of transgender people in general and the skewed perspective of Pride in the recent edition where Pride was mentioned but not adequately covered to reflect the LGBGTQIA community.
Pride this year was supposed to represent Beyond the Rainbow to include transgender, intersex and asexual people and non-binary people (and others who are part of the LGBTQ* community here) but was misrepresented as just the beginning of the rainbow with no explanation and understanding of the purpose of the theme.
I know there are Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists (a correct explanation not a slur) in this community it is concerning that transgender people are not being included, in light of the current national transphobic views nationwide. As a liberal and accepting community there are hateful elements that have shown themselves, especially since last year over the transphobic and highly dramatized story about the YMCA which caused a lot of hurt and unnecessary discrimination against the young transgender woman employee at the YMCA and affected many other transgender people both directly and tangentially.
I would appreciate fair representation of transgender folks in our community and any personal transphobic views not to influence fair reporting by The Leader.
As a cisgender straight female I wholeheartedly support transgender folks in our community and would like to see a more balanced reporting both for this year's Pride celebrations and in general. If it was not for transgender people like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera fighting for LGBTQ* rights and culminating in the Stonewall Riots all LGBTQ* people would not have the freedom and rights they have today. In this current climate where transgender rights are being reversed, against both medical and psychological recommendations support and understanding of transgender people in our community is essential. Please consider providing more and accurate coverage around this issue.
