David H. Weakley (Dave), resident of Port Ludlow, WA passed away November 7, 2018, from heart failure at Harrison Medical Center. Dave was born in Glendale, CA, the youngest of four.
Dave graduated from Central Union High School, El Centro, CA in 1947; from Pomona College in Claremont, CA in 1951; received two Master’s degrees from San Diego State University and did post-graduate work in the Stanford University Ph.D. program. Dave’s first marriage in 1952 welcomed one son, Craig Vincent, and one daughter, Carrie Lynn.
Dave served in the U.S. Army Infantry (1953-1955) in Trieste, Italy, and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Sgt. First Class.
Dave’s professional career was education, spanning 35 years (1955-1990) Dave worked for the Salinas Unified School District (1955-1973), starting as teacher and ending as H.S. Principal. Dave also served in the Alhambra, CA School District as Principal from 1973-1990. Dave held many leadership roles including being chair of accreditations of schools throughout California as well as Maui, Hawaii, and Nagoya and Okinawa, Japan.
Dave met the love of his life, Anita Miller, and married in 1973, in San Marino, CA. They welcomed another teenage son, Anthony Dabney, and God-daughter, Ana Luisa Espinosa, into their lives. During their almost 46 years of marriage, they were a team as parents, educators, Rotarians, business owners and travelers.
Dave’s love of music began as a child and continued throughout his adult life. He sang bass in barbershop quartets for more than 60 years. Dave immediately joined the Village Sounders barbershop group and sang with the Kitsap Music Association Chorale. Dave sang with and then directed the Port Ludlow Singers since 2005. He was preparing his mixed gender community chorus for Christmas season performances less than one week before he passed. Dave spent a lifetime helping to “Keep America Singing.”
Dave was an active member of Rotary International (1961-2004) in Salinas and Alhambra. He served as Club President twice, was Assistant Governor for three governors (2000-2003), and was named Rotarian of the Year in 1997-98. Dave exemplified service above self and was a man of deep faith. He was devoted to his wife and extended family. He had a zest for life, high intelligence, wonderful sense of humor, and charismatic personality that allowed everyone to feel his genuine acceptance and inclusion. His integrity and impactful life was beyond reproach.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sister and his beloved daughter Carrie Lynn Gummer (Brian). He is survived by his wife Anita, his sons Craig (Claudia Peters) and Anthony (Gayla), God-daughter Ana Luisa Castillo (Beethoven), eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
