‘Dancing with Saints’

A group of children from ages 2 and a half to 12 years old spent a week “Dancing with Saints” at the annual Art & Soul camp offered by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

The kids learned about compassion, peacemaking, nonviolence, strength and resilience through the lives of three spiritual leaders, St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Mahatma Gandhi, and took part in arts and performance activities, such as painting and singing.

Every morning of the five-day camp started with a moment of silence while the kids sat in a circle at the church’s labyrinth. “We feel like we’re all in the same place together,” the Rev. Dianne Andrews told the children, explaining why she likes to have the group sit in a circle instead of rows. A moment of silence, heralded by three chimes, began the day. “We listen to everything around us, it’s peaceful,” said student Abby Appleton. Andrews encouraged the children to take that peace with them, wherever they are. It’s a place they can always come back to, she said.

On Thursday, Aug. 10, the children listened to Tolstoy’s short story “The Three Questions” before breaking into groups to create art and make music in preparation for their performance for friends and family on Friday.

The church, located in the Uptown District of Port Townsend, also offered a program earlier in the summer for older kids and teens called Water & Soul.
