As a yankee from Buffalo, New York, Gurf Morlix found the new sound he was looking for in the Lone Star State. “I wanted to play rock ‘n roll and country music,” he said. “I couldn’t find many people who wanted to do that.” But he heard tell of a vibrant music scene in Austin, Texas. He showed up there out of the blue one day to make his mark. “I was in a band in a couple weeks, playing original songs - rock ‘n roll and country,” Morlix said. On his latest album, “Impossible Blue,” Morlix said he is exploring the silver lining of blues music. “Some people say my albums are sparse, but I don’t mind a sonic squall, if that’s what is called for. It’s just that I like tasteful arrangements. And I think the lyrics are one of the most important aspects of the song, so the listener should be able to hear them easily.” Morlix was inducted into the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2004 and was dubbed the 2009 Instrumentalist of the Year in 2009. Gorlix will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 3 at Rainshadow Recording, 200 Battery Way, Bldg 315 Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. For this show, Morlix will take the stage as a solo act with several instruments. “It is me, my guitar and my foot drums that I stomp on,” he said. “Kind of a one man band thing.” He said his show will concentrate on stories through song that are intended to make the audience cry, laugh and be moved. Everett Moran, owner of Rainshadow Recording, said he has been trying to book Morlix for a show for some time. “I have listened to and admired Gurf’s playing and production work for years, but had not been aware of him as a singer-songwriter until I heard him perform a set of Blaze Foley songs,” Moran said. “Having worked with so many fine songwriters over the years, one might think it inevitable that Gurf would follow suit.” Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets.
