Constitution makes America ‘exceptional’

What makes the United States of America exceptional? It’s not because we are more intelligent than other people. It’s not because we are any “better” than others. It’s not because of the color of our eyes or skin. It’s not because of money. It’s not because of our “virtue” or enterprise.

What makes America exceptional is that, for the first time in the history of mankind, a system of government was formed to allow its citizens to be free. Although it took a while, even slaves were set free.

Citizens were free to speak out, even criticize their own leaders. Free to worship as they saw fit. Free to own property.

Our Constitution was, and is, an exceptional document.

It provided a foundation for a Martin Luther King Jr. to advance a Dream; for an African-American girl from the south side of Chicago to one day become the First Lady; and for any one of us to become the person we were created to be.
