Consider sharing your stimulus check with JCIRA | Letter to the editor

Many of us will be receiving COVID relief stimulus checks. For those who have lost jobs or seen their income reduced because of the pandemic, this will be a much needed assistance in paying accumulated bills such as rent or mortgage as well as credit card bills for food, clothing, medical care and other necessities.

But some of our neighbors will not receive this government help because they are non-citizens who do not have authorization to be in this country.

They have come to escape persecution, violence, or unsustainable economic conditions. Their labor is essential to our economy. They, too, need help.

If you are fortunate enough to not need some or all of your relief check, please consider a donation to help those who desperately need additional funds.

Jefferson County Immigration Rights Advocates (JCIRA) is one organization that offers financial help to immigrants without regard to immigration status.

So far this year, JCIRA’s Family Support Fund has issued $500 grants to more than 60 families in Jefferson and Clallam counties.

The need continues. Your tax-deductible contribution will go entirely to family support with no monies taken out for administrative expenses.

Checks can be made out to JCIRA and mailed to JCIRA, PO Box 647, Port Townsend, WA 98368. Donations can also be made online via the JCIRA website, www.jcira.org.
