Jefferson County Community Health Assessment. 6-7 p.m. Tri-Area Community Center, 110 W. Valley Road, Chimacum. The Jefferson County Democrats have scheduled a public presentation about the Community Health Assessment conducted in the county last year. John Nowak, co-executive director of the Community Health Improvement Plan and Care Coordination for Jefferson County, will present the findings, red flags, opportunities and progress.

Kayaking the Inside Passage with John McCormack. 7 p.m. Port Townsend Public Library. McCormack, a teacher at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking, is also an experienced solo kayaker, having paddled the complete Canadian portion of the Inside Passage, from Bellingham to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. He has also paddled in the Queen Charlotte Islands, from Ninstints to Skidegate. His talk will concentrate on the journey from Sointula, near Port McNeill, to Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlottes. Topics discussed will include solo kayaking, camping, marine hazards, native resurgence, wildlife and the consequences of extractive industries on the coast.

This year, volunteers will be pulling invasive European Dune Grass from the beaches of Fort Worden. MLK Day mulching at Blue Heron. 1-3 p.m. Blue Heron Middle School, 3939 San Juan Ave. Volunteers will be spreading 70 yards of compost, mulch and wood chips around the 70 fruit trees at the middle school orchard. Bring wheelbarrows and shovels if you have them, and extra buckets and wheelbarrows to share, if possible. Gloves, water bottles, snacks and correct clothing for the weather are also useful. Clemente-Coast Salish Weaving. 6-7:30 p.m. Finnriver Cider Garden, Taproom & Orchard. Dr. Susan Pavel first learned Coast Salish weaving in 1996, and went from gifting ceremonial blankets to tribal elders, to teach more than 2,500 students in weaving classes. Her apprentice, Kelly Sullivan, has helped her bring a resurgence of Coast Salish wool weaving to the Port Gamble S’Klallam community.   

“Divisive Issues of Our Time” lecture series, part two of four: Roe v. Wade. 6-7:30 p.m. Jefferson County Library. Criminal appellate attorney Pete Gartlan discusses the history and possible future of abortion rights under the federal Constitution. Birdscaping — Inviting Birds to Your Yard. 7 p.m. Port Townsend Community Center. Carolyn Wilcox, owner and guide for Experience Olympic Tours on the Olympic Peninsula, will share her expertise from living on a mall urban-forest edge lot in Port Angeles, near Valley Creek. More than 20 species of birds have accepted her invitation to winter over in her yard, and she will explain how to create varied bird habitat with dead wood, hedges, native plants, feeders, nest boxes, and water features, all while promoting the safe movement of birds throughout the surroundings.  She will also cover ways to avoid rats, mice, and other interlopers.

Become an eBirder — Intro to using eBird in your birdwatching life. 8:30-11:30 a.m. Meet at Reveille at the Commons, Ford Worden State Park. eBird is a smart phone application that connects your birdwatching to real citizen science across the globe. Participants will need binoculars, a smart phone, and eBird downloaded onto their phones, and will walk from the Fort Worden Commons to Battery Hill and back, entering all their findings into eBird. This is the first in a series of three introductory eBird field trips. Future trips include Kah Tai in February and Point Hudson in March. Geology presentation on the origins of local mountain ranges. 4-5 p.m. Port Townsend High School auditorium, 1500 Van Ness St. Dr. Jeffrey Tepper from University of Puget Sound in Tacoma explains how Port Townsend lies between two mountain belts with very different origins — the oceanic Olympic Mountains to the west, and the continental Cascade Range to the east — whose histories are nonetheless intimately connected.

Novel plant communities and partnerships — Strategies for prairie habitat conservation and restoration in Western Washington. 7 p.m. Port Townsend Community Center. Sarah Hamman is the restoration ecologist for the Center for Natural Lands Management, a conservation non-profit based out of Washington and California, whose work is aimed at researching and restoring rare species habitat in Pacific Northwest prairies and oak woodlands. She’s involved in all stages of the restoration process, with the goal of developing the most effective techniques to restore resilient, diverse above-and below-ground communities. Sarah’s training is in ecosystem ecology with a focus on forest and grassland fire. She’s also an adjunct professor at Evergreen State College, where she teaches in the Master’s of Environmental Studies program.
