The days are longer, darker, colder and wetter. What should we do? For many of us who came of age “yesteryear,” the family radio console would attract us as listeners of “Fibber McGee and Molly,” “Amos and Andy,” “Inner Sanctum,” “The Lone Ranger” and many other shows.

Last week’s Dine and Discover was a delightful review of those old radio programs by Neal and Linda Shulman, who presented “The Old Time Radio Hour” at The Beach Club. The packed house actually seemed to be knowledgeable enough about all of the old shows that its members’ maturity might have been exposed. The show proved to be a lot of fun, with new information about radio and its offerings during the middle of the last century.

This week, BJ and I are “tag-team babysitting” the two oldest grandsons in Seattle. Their parents thought this was a great time to spend time in Portugal, Spain and England. For some reason, their sons, BJ and I did not end up being a part of those plans. Hmmmm. Heck, it gives us time to do some rare shopping and sightseeing in Seattle.

On the subject of travel, be sure to stop in to Sonja’s Bayside Barber shop for some tales of her recent trip to Palm Springs. The highlight might have been her trip up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, ending at an elevation of 8,516 feet. It seems that some of the tram’s motion may have not helped the sins of the previous evening’s food and drink to settle down. No matter, it was warm and dry. Well, not so warm at the top.

Those of us in the East Jefferson Rotary Club thank you for your support of our program erecting American flags in Port Hadlock, Chimacum, Kala Point, Port Ludlow and a couple of other places. Since the 2018 invoices will soon be coming out, we can also remind you that the club uses the money for projects ranging from efforts to eradicate polio to building the shelter at H.J. Carroll Park to several scholarships for local students each year. And, frankly, the flags really dress up the area on the five holidays each year we put them up. Thanks to all of you who support this project.

CONCERTS

RainShadow Chorale is presenting its fall 2017 concert this Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Chimacum High School auditorium. The concert features Mozart’s final composition, the Requiem, a work of surpassing eloquence, beauty and power. The program is conducted by RainShadow’s artistic director, Rebecca Rottsolk. Pianist Lisa Lanza accompanies RainShadow with her usual grace and talent.

And now the news you have been waiting for. The Wabash College Little Giants defeated the DePauw Tigers last weekend 22-21 and in doing so, reclaimed possession of the iconic Monon Bell. As legendary football player Lou Holtz is rumored to have said, anything more than a point is running up the score.
