Dan Galpern of the Climate Protection & Restoration Initiative will speak Wednesday, June 22 at Finnriver Farm & Cidery during Day 1 of the nonprofit’s Climate Emergency Tour.

Galpern is the founder, general counsel, and executive director of the group.

The initiative has a mission to protect and restore the climate system for future generations and the natural world, and filed a 112-page petition June 16 with the Environmental Protection Agency to demand protection from greenhouse gases.

EPA has a statutory deadline of 90 days to decide to accept or reject the petition from the Climate Protection & Restoration Initiative.

Galpern is a practicing environmental attorney and founded the initiative three years ago, “to break through the absurd political deadlock and press our government to exercise real leadership on climate, at long last, by enforcing existing law.”

The Port Townsend-area event is the first official public stop on Galpern’s “CPR Climate Emergency Tour,” which will see him ride  his Outrider Alpha (a recumbent trike with an electric assist) nearly 4,000 miles from Cape Alava, Washington to West Quoddy Head, Maine.

Talks are planned along the way. Wednesday’s talk begins at 6 p.m., and  Galpern said he intends to meet others in Port Angeles at noon at the Olympic National Park Visitors Center.

“I’ve got 134 miles of rolling hills from Cape Alava to Port Townsend, so I need to be riding by 6 a.m. Wednesday. Good thing I’m an early riser,” Galpern said.

At the Finnriver Farm and Cidery/Climate on Tap! event, he said he intends to explain what people can do right now “to help arrest the climate crisis and restore a viable future for our children and their progeny.”
