Port Townsend looks at golf course irrigation well

The Port Townsend City Council was scheduled this week to review a plan that would spend up to $245,000 to complete a groundwater well project at the Port Townsend Golf Course.

The city council met Jan. 18 to make a decision on the resolution. If passed, the project would provide irrigation for the city-owned golf course on Blaine Street, doubling as an emergency water supply in Port Townsend.

Much of the irrigation project was completed between 2017 and 2018, with $80,000 spent to drill and develop the groundwater well.

The new installations would involve adding a well pump, extra piping, a pump house building, and other tasks to wrap up the project.

The original cost of the project was estimated to be around $145,000, although supply chain interruptions, inflation, nearby construction companies unwilling to accept smaller projects, and other factors have caused the labor and installation costs to swell, according to city staff.

Approval of the well project would require a $100,000 budget amendment increase along with potential delays of other city ventures.
