Jon Stafford, spring director of the Community Chorus of Port Townsend and East Jefferson County, has selected music by Shawn Kirchner to center the chorus’ next performances.
Kirchner is a nationally known contemporary composer, pianist and arranger who lives in Los Angeles but has family ties to Port Townsend.
Stafford has long enjoyed Kirchner’s music, and is delighted that the composer has agreed to teach a master class in Port Townsend, about a month prior to the concerts scheduled for April 4-6.
During that session, Kirchner will provide the choir with guidance on interpreting and expressing his music.
Linda Atkins, chorus president, said another exciting aspect of this spring’s program is that the Community Chorus will be collaborating with other choirs, including the Peninsula Singers of Sequim, which Stafford also directs, and members of the Port Townsend-based Summertime Singers and RainShadow Chorale.
The Community Chorus was founded in 1975, and celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Part of the chorus’ mission is to help singers return to singing, even if they haven’t sung in years.
Many types of support are offered, including optional bonus rehearsals, vocal skill aids, and sound files for those who might want additional help to learn the music.
Another key component of the organization’s mission is education.
The chorus offers a scholarship to promising college students and high school seniors, who are continuing their studies of vocal music at the college and university level.
The Community Chorus is inviting local singers to join the program and men are particularly encouraged to sign up. “We’re always looking for people who want to sing!” said Atkins. “We’ll have some fun while we make music together.”
The registration fee is $35 and includes a special in-person workshop with Kircher. All singers aged 16 and older are welcome, and no auditions are required.
Rehearsals for April concerts began on Jan. 12, at Grace Lutheran Church. Rehearsals continue on subsequent Sundays at the church at 1120 Walker St. starting at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, which is the final deadline to register. Singing is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
