A man, a woman and a dog were left homeless after a residential fire in Chimacum whose cause is still under investigation, according to East Jefferson Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer Bill Beezley.

Beezley informed The Leader his crews received notice of the fire at 2:06 p.m. July 26, and were joined at the scene, at 431 Center Road, just south of the intersection with Highway 19, by fellow responders from Quilcene Fire and Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire and Rescue, the Department of Natural Resources and Engine 91 of Naval Magazine Indian Island.

Beezley estimated 1.1 acres burned around the residence, which he described as a recreational vehicle, with “a big supply of tires” falling within that burn radius and contributing to the hazards of the smoke and flames.

The man and woman, who were tenants of the recreational vehicle on the property, originally reported the fire as a grass fire, before evacuating with one of their two dogs.

“They lost all their belongings, their car and the residence,” Beezley said. “They’ve been offered temporary living assistance.”

The property owner, who is neither the man nor the woman who lived in the since-burned residence, lives on a parcel of land adjacent to, but well outside of, the radius of the fire. According to Beezley, the owner did not respond to emergency crews’ attempts to contact them, and The Leader received no response when attempting to make contact.

Beezley declined to speculate on the cause of the fire or the approximate dollar value of damages, but he did note the couple was at home at the time, and added the man, the woman and one of their two dogs had been given shelter for the night of July 26.

As of July 30, Beezley did not have a status on the missing dog, but he was able to confirm the fire is not considered suspicious.
