Children’s book profits delivered to nonprofit

Posted

The Artful Sailor recently presented the profits earned from sales of Marie Delaney’s children’s book “Salty and the Pirates,” to representatives from Olympic Neighbors.

Olympic Neighbors, a local nonprofit that serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, accepted the donation check for $400 from Emiliano Marino, co-owner of The Artful Sailor Whole Earth Nautical Supply.

Marino said the subject matter of the book seemed fitting considering their endeavor.

“Salty and the Pirates is an adventure story and this adventure that we’ve embarked upon with Olympic Neighbors has been wonderful,” Marino said.

Randy Rosens, a board member for Olympic Neighbors, lauded the partnership between the downtown merchant and the nonprofit.

“This exemplifies the spirit of community collaboration,” Rosens said. “Bringing together a community artist, a community shipwright and merchant and a community venture to provide housing and inclusion for all of our Port Townsend citizens.”

“Unfortunately Washington is ranked at the bottom in the nation for funds for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Claudia Coppola, Olympic Neighbors program coordinator. “We have a real housing crisis for this population and Olympic Neighbors wants to ensure that people with IDD can live really good lives in the community.”

Reed Thomson, is a resident of Olympic Neighbors’ adult family home, Hamilton House. Thomson said after living in other places, the vibe at Hamilton House was appreciably drama-free.

“I love it. It’s fun, it’s very relaxed,” Thomson said.
