There have been a number of reports of vehicle prowls in Port Townsend in the past two weeks.

Port Townsend Police Chief Michael Evans said the uptick likely is because of an increase in people looking for money to buy drugs.

“Lock your doors. Be vigilant. And please report it, because it is a crime,” Evans said. “For every vehicle prowl reported, there probably is one that isn’t reported.”

Evans said it helps police track what is going on when people report the incidents, the reports of which include:

• Someone rifled through a woman’s car Dec. 4. It was parked between Polk and Lawrence streets. A wallet and luggage, $100 in cash and cashier’s checks were taken. Total value of items taken was estimated to be $695.

• Camping gear and other items estimated at $805 were taken from a vehicle Dec. 11. It was parked in the 900 block of Rose Street. A sleeping bag, freeze-dried food, a first-aid kit and other items were taken.

• Two vehicles on L and Cherry streets were rummaged through, it was reported Dec. 11. It was not clear if anything was taken.

• Also on Dec. 11, someone accessed two vehicles and emptied the glove boxes. The vehicles were parked on the 800 block of J Street. Again, it’s not clear if anything was taken.

• Tools and other items from two unlocked trucks parked in the 100 block of 25th Street were dumped on the ground on Dec. 12. It wasn’t clear if anything was stolen, but it was clear someone had gone through the vehicles,

Evans said.

• On Dec. 12, someone got into a vehicle parked in the 700 block of H Street, threw a child seat into the road and rummaged through the vehicle. Again, it was not clear if anything was taken.
