Jon Stuart, acting sergeant for the Port Townsend Police Department, used a bolt cutters to provide access to the fenced-in abandoned wharf so six East Jefferson Fire Rescue firefighters could access the scene.
Jason MacDonald, Fire Rescue’s battalion chief, told The Leader that the fire burned a hole approximately 3 feet in diameter, and appeared to have ignited on the top of the plywood structure that was once home to the Surf restaurant.
The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
MacDonald stated that the wharf blaze was the fourth fire in since Thursday that firefighters have been called out on. “People need to be extremely careful with any kind of flammable material,” he said.
