Candidates line up for East JeffCo fire chief

East Jefferson Fire Rescue has nearly two dozen candidates who want to be the department’s next fire chief.

The deadline for applications for the position was Thursday, July 30. Fire department officials said Monday the agency has received 22 applications.

The vacancy in the chief’s position for East Jefferson Fire Rescue was prompted by the May resignation of Jim Walkowski.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue Chief Dan Smith took over as interim fire chief of the fire department after the board approved an interlocal contract with North Kitsap commissioners last month to have Smith lead the JeffCo department until a permanent replacement could be found.

In its posting for the job, East Jefferson Fire Rescue said its ideal candidate for chief “will be an engaged manager and mentor with a history of building and maintaining strong teams. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrated personal integrity and a proven track record of honesty at all times.”
