Can we survive the swing into spring? | Life in Ludlow

Posted

OK, it is spring so settle down. If you have so much energy with the nicer weather you need to control yourself.

It seems as if there are thousands of folks out walking. The pickle ball players are going to wear out the grass walking from their cars to the courts at Kehele Park. The bikes! The bikes are everywhere; the new ones with battery power in them and the little ones with kids on them. Those battery powered electric bikes are increasingly attractive to those of us wanting to bike but who also view biking the local hills as one might view a military mission.

Folks interested in gardening are having their own personal raptures this week with all the sunshine. We have a neighbor looking at a significant landscaping project. I am optimistic he will contract with folks who at least have stronger backs than mine, not that I would consider lending a hand, or anything else.

The exercise class at the marina is getting their money’s worth with great views of the mountains and the water whilst working up a severe caffeine deprivation before stopping for coffee.

The whole scene seems to be on steroids as the pandemic induced pent-up demand for eating out, traveling, visiting friends and family, and going to the movies is released.

The Rose Theatre is not yet open but the frozen yogurt is available at O’Yummy’s just down the street. We don’t need a movie for that.

I cannot wait to get back into the garage to once again engage in some automobile cosmetology. BJ loves it when I once again take inventory of the car care products I have, and then go get some more. Griot’s Garage in Tacoma is my favorite destination.

Local friend, Rotarian, and graduate of East Liverpool, Ohio High School is partnering with me to put together a car show here in Port Ludlow next September. The “social distancing,” “masks” and other pandemic living highlights should not be needed, we hope.

Nonetheless, I suspect the passion many have to clean, show and lie about their cars will be on full display as we see more spring and summer.

I am certain you have seen the reports of people being ready to get together with people. The Rotary Club is trying to figure out when we can actually get together for a meal or a project that doesn’t involve Zoom.

The poker group I am in is planning to start up again with some absolute requirements. All players have to be vaccinated, no more than six players at a time, and you have to be prepared to lose at least $1.25 to me.

We did some home interior maintenance this past year and look forward to finally getting the house painted this summer. We are in line right behind neighbors Pete and Helen Leenhouts and look forward to them ceding their position to us. It just seems right as the “neighborly” thing to do.

We suspect many others in the area are engaged in home maintenance and or remodeling this year. This, of course, is in addition to the “Tiny Houses” going up behind the Methodist church in Chimacum. Now there is a project worthy of investigation and support.

BJ and I are supporters of the Jefferson Community Foundation so I attended a Zoom meeting recently that provided an update on all the financial support and leadership they have provided this past year. The financial help the foundation provided came from all of the good folks who donated to meet the needs of folks affected by the pandemic.

So, spring is here and walks, bikes, flowers, home and car maintenance plus philanthropy need to be put on your “to do” list, right now! OMG, I am now very tired. It is probably due to my allergy meds. Time for a nap.

Love a curmudgeon, welcome Spring and have a great week.
