The family of Calvin Fremont Leech, regrets to share his passing on Jan. 3, 2022 at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.

We are grateful that Calvin enjoyed a healthy and independent life up to his hospitalization. Calvin has resided in Port Townsend, Washington for approximately the past 20 years. There he has made many friends from spending time at the local gym, marina, music venues and restaurants.

Calvin was born May 15, 1937, in Colfax Township, Minnesota to Roy P. Leech and Ann Moe. His family moved to Sequim, Wash. in 1946 where Calvin attended school. Following high school graduation, Calvin worked briefly before entering the Air Force in February 1956 where his duty included some time in Japan. He received an honorable discharge from the military in September 1959 but continued in aircraft maintenance with the Reserves through January 1962.

Shortly after his discharge from the Air Force, Calvin began a long career as a survey engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. His career provided travel and assignments throughout the United States. Calvin’s work brought him to underground Seattle, out on sandbars in the Columbia River, to U.S. military installations, river dams, and to the mountains of many states, including Mount St. Helens shortly before it erupted. Calvin acquired many skills and learned a lot about the geology of the land. He enjoyed collecting interesting rocks found wherever he traveled. Calvin’s experience in the service and years traveling with the Army Corps of Engineers provided him with many fascinating stories to share.

In 1977 Calvin met his life partner, Joy Ohrt, and they spent the next 37 years together until her passing. Together they enjoyed dancing, boating and owning an ice-cream shop in Auburn, Wash. Calvin and Joy lived on a boat for most of their years together which brought them to Port Townsend in approximately 2002. Together they bought property just outside Port Townsend where Calvin built a home, and resided prior to his death.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and his partner, Joy Ohrt. He is survived by his brother, Jerry Leech (Lolia) of Port Angeles; nieces Rita Reandeau Wynne (Jim), Marcia Thomsen (Greg), nephews Ken Reandeau (Julie), and Neal Allen (Bonny Lake); and step-children Curt Ohrt (Becky), Velinda Ohrt, Jeff Ohrt, and Venessa Toland.

Services for Calvin will be held at Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend at noon Saturday, Jan. 15, followed by a visit to the graveside at Laurel Grove Cemetery for the family.
