Acclaimed caller Lindsey Dono joins young musical duo Kate Powers and David Rivers to lead a contra dance, Saturday, Dec. 17.
The monthly dance sponsored by the Quimper Grange is 7:30-11 p.m. at the Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend. The event begins with a half-hour workshop that goes over the basic moves and patterns of contra dancing. Cost is $6 to attend. Ages 16 and younger are admitted for free.
Powers (fiddle) and Rivers (guitar) have been playing together for a year. The two initially joined forces to record Powers’ album “Jump,” and since then decided to continue playing concerts and dances together. Powers, age 17, started fiddling six years ago.The duo’s joint musical style is a mix of bluegrass, old-time, Scottish, Irish and Cape Breton tunes, along with some of Powers’ original compositions.
Dono is a Massachusetts transplant. “We are lucky to have her coming for this holiday-time dance as she regularly calls dances from Bellingham to Portland,” said coordinator Tinker Cavallaro in a press release. “Her instructions are poised and serene, her programming of the dances meticulous, and her sunshiny demeanor and ease quickly transforms newcomers into regular dancers.”
