Has the thought of a child without a birthday cake ever crossed your mind?
It happens more than we know, but Cake4Kids is changing that. Founded in 2010, Cake4Kids is a nonprofit organization that provides birthday cakes to at-risk children. What started as a grassroots effort with a few volunteers turned into hundreds of volunteers baking
3,000 cakes per year across the country! The nonprofit recently expanded to Washington and opened a chapter in East Jefferson County. The chapter is looking for volunteers who love to bake and support their community.
How does it work? Cake4Kids coordinates with agencies that support homeless children, child survivors of domestic violence or human trafficking, those in foster care, and youth living in poverty. Agencies input cake requests into an online system. Volunteers choose the requests they want to fulfill. Volunteers bake and decorate in their home, and deliver to the agency, who gets the sweets to the birthday child.
Jefferson County’s chapter will serve Quilcene to Port Townsend. Bakers must be 18 years or older, have reasonable baking/decorating skills, and transportation to deliver cakes. There is no minimum commitment: Some volunteers bake once a month, or a few times a year.
More info and volunteer registration is available online at www.cake4kids.org. The local Cake4Kids Ambassador is also available to answer questions: cynthia@cake4kids.org or 206-580-3766.
