Glen Jones of Brinnon is set to be arraigned in Jefferson County Superior Court Feb. 3 for two counts of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon stemming from a Jan. 29 vehicle chase that ended in Jones being tasered for allegedly attacking a sheriff’s deputy with a claw hammer.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy Derek Allen had been patrolling Brinnon at about noon on Sunday, Jan. 29 when he encountered 59-year-old Jones, according to a probable-cause statement filed in superior court.

Allen was driving in the area of Schoolhouse and Dosewallips roads, when he saw a small Dodge truck being driven by Jones, according to documents.

When Allen observed a minor traffic violation and tried to pull the vehicle over, Jones sped away after Allen turned on his patrol car’s emergency lights. Jones then drove onto the shoulder and made an abrupt U-turn, driving back toward Allen and crossing into his lane, forcing Allen to make an evasive maneuver to get out of Jones’ path and avoid being struck head on, according to documents.

Allen made a U-turn to pursue Jones, and Jones turned around again to chase Allen, the deputy reported. When Allen stopped at the intersection of Schoolhouse and Dosewallips roads, Allen attempted once more to run into his vehicle, the deputy reported. Allen responded by driving his patrol car into the right side of Jones’ car, preventing the vehicle from continuing farther.

Jones armed himself with a claw hammer and got out of his car, charging toward Allen, according to court documents. Allen used his Taser twice, striking Jones, but it had no effect. Jones, still holding the hammer, attempted to get into the patrol car through the open driver’s door. Allen then ran up and tackled Jones, documents said. The two fought for several minutes, during which time Jones continued to hold the hammer in his hand.

Because Allen was in the southern part of the county, it took about 19 minutes for deputies and troopers from the Washington State Patrol to arrive and assist him, according to court documents.

Jones was taken to Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend, where he was cleared for booking at the Jefferson County Jail.

Allen sustained minor injuries from the assault, and is to remain on medical leave for “the next week at least,” according to Detective Brett Anglin.

On Jan. 30, a protection order was imposed on Jones, barring him from further contact with Allen.

Jones was ordered to be held on bail of $500,000 cash or bond. Jones remained in Jefferson County Jail as of Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The cause or motive of the attack remains unknown, according to Anglin.

“I couldn’t even begin to surmise without further evidence,” Anglin said.

Anglin added that a search warrant was obtained and a search conducted in Jones’ house and vehicle. A bulletproof vest was found in his vehicle.

When Allen was struggling to take Jones into custody, he saw several witnesses in the area, who pulled up to his location while he was in the road and stopped. According to Allen, the witnesses either turned around and drove away, or maneuvered around his patrol vehicle and continued.
