Local investing
On Monday, May 6, LION (Local Investing Opportunity Network) will hold a public meeting at Finnriver Cidery from 4:30-6:30 pm. The meeting is open to current and potential members, as well as businesses that might be interested in funding. The meeting will include presentations from three groups that have received LION member funding: Quillbilly’s, Sail Port Townsend, and the new owners of Community Build’s first Tiny House on Wheels. LION is not an investment club. Each member makes their own choices of which opportunities they are interested in, and then works directly with that business. For members, it is a chance to see the impact of a local investment. For businesses, it is a chance to get both funding and a personal relationship with their lender.

Tutors
Volunteers in the AAUW Tutoring Program are making a difference by tutoring kids in reading and math at Chimacum Creek Primary and Chimacum Elementary Schools. Some of the 36 volunteers gathered to celebrate hundreds of hours of connecting with children commenting on the pleasure and rewards of sharing the magic of reading and math with young learners. More volunteers are needed and anyone interested may call Christine at 201-290-4761 for more information. The only requirements are a love of children and reading.
Finalists
Foreword Reviews announced Teresa H. Janssen (Historical Fiction), and Anna Quinn (Religious/Spiritual Fiction) both of Port Townsend are finalists for the 2023 Indies Book of the Year Awards. They await judgment from teams of librarians and booksellers nationwide in June. In Janssen’s “The Ways of Water” Josie Belle Gore journeys with her itinerant family through the deserts of the boom-and-bust American West and revolutionary Mexico. In this lyrical tale of loss, hope, and forgiveness, Josie learns that two things are constant: water is precious, and her role in the family is to save it. Quinn’s novel, “Angeline” is the story of a young nun with a tragic past who is presented with a chance for a new beginning when she is transferred from a cloistered convent in Chicago, to a radical convent on an island in the Pacific Northwest led by “the Gloria Steinem of nuns.”
