While their annual golf benefit at the Port Ludlow Golf Course helps support Dove House Advocacy Services in Port Townsend, the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Boeing Bluebills rely on another fundraiser to help support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in Jefferson, Kitsap and Clallam counties.
The Bluebills are heading back to Port Ludlow, this time for what event co-organizer Clint Webb described as a “giant” used book and media sale, Sept. 29 at the Beach Club at 119 Marina View Drive.
“The goals for these STEM programs are ambitious, and require significant financial support,” Webb said. “Our initial efforts, working with the schools in Jefferson and Clallam counties, have provided them with financial support in a number of ways.”
In February of this year, the Bluebills' monthly flier credited Jay Gilmour with helping to get the Bluebills' STEM partnership with the Museum of Flight in Seattle, as well as the Peninsula Service Organization, “off the ground.”
Bob Reasoner, representing the Peninsula Service Organization, pledged during an Aug. 22 meeting with the Chimacum School District to incorporate robotics into every classroom in Jefferson County by the end of this year.
“Funds have been provided for student and staff trips to the Museum of Flight, along with presentations to schools on flight, rocketry and astronomy,” Webb said. “Our near-term plans include introducing the design and operation of robots to every school in the county, and providing the opportunity for every eighth-grade student to learn about flight and space travel by going to the Museum of Flight itself.”
More donations of books, CDs and DVDs to the sale are welcome to help support these projects and can be brought to the Beach Club Sept. 28, the day before the sale, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The sale itself runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 29, for a $5 admission fee for an “early bird” sale from 9 to 10 a.m. The rest of the day is free admission, and from 3 to 4 p.m., a “fill the bag” sale will allow buyers to fill a paper grocery bag with books, CDs and DVDs for $5.
