The body of a 56-year-old Idaho man was recovered July 17 at East Beach County Park on Marrowstone Island.

At 12:22 p.m., July 17, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) received a report from a citizen walking on the beach who reported seeing what appeared to be a body in the water.

Deputies responded and later confirmed the body to be that of Troy A. Gascon, according to a press release from JCSO. The body was recovered with assistance from East Jefferson Fire Rescue.

Gascon was last seen aboard a boat on Port Townsend Bay by a friend and fellow mariner at about 10 p.m. on July 14.

On July 15 at about 7 p.m., the United States Coast Guard (USCG) located an overturned skiff in the Marrowstone area.

At 3:15 p.m., USCG requested assistance from JCSO to conduct a check of local marinas in an attempt to locate Gaston’s vehicle.

The JCSO patrol vessel Valor, with assistance from the Port Townsend Police Department and USCG. conducted a search until sunset.

The USCG suspended the search at about 8:30 p.m. after finding no sign of Gascon.

Gascon’s death is likely accidental or due to natural causes, and foul play is not suspected, according to JCSO.

An autopsy was conducted and the final determination of the cause of death is pending toxicology results, which could take approximately six weeks.
