The body of 28-year-old Terrance Lavergne, who had been reported missing Feb. 18, was recovered Feb. 27 near where he was last seen off a beach near Thorndyke Road.

An autopsy concluded that he had died by saltwater drowning, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Detective Joe Nole, who added that there were no signs of trauma or anything suspicious about the death.

The body was located on the beach near the high tide line by coworkers as they began their shift at Bayshore Shellfish Inc., 4255 Thorndyke Road. Lavergne’s body was found on dry beach near the high tide area approximately 300 feet northeast of where he went into the water, Nole wrote in an email Monday, March 5.

Earlier, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said a boot and a headlamp had been found after Lavergne’s rowboat capsized south of the Hood Canal Bridge. They believe the two items belonged to the man.

Lavergne reportedly was wearing waders, which he may have removed at the time of the accident. He was not wearing a life vest, a press release from the sheriff’s office said. At the time of the incident, the tide was going out and the wind was causing rough water.

Fire and U.S. Coast Guard authorities searched for 18 hours in the area where he went missing before suspending the search.
