Homeless-count training Jan. 8

The annual Point in Time Count of the Homeless is to take place in Jefferson County during the week of Jan. 22-27.

The count, sponsored by Olympic Community Action Programs (OlyCAP), is conducted by volunteers at the food banks and at special count events throughout the county.

Volunteer training is presented at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum at 9 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8.

The results of this count are used to obtain funding for additional affordable housing and to increase support of those in need of housing by connecting them to the appropriate service providers, according to a press release from OlyCAP.

In 2018, OlyCAP is also attempting to obtain a comprehensive count of homeless youth in Jefferson County for planning and for developing resources, such as a shelter, to better serve youth and young adults (ages 14-24) who are “couch surfing” or living with friends and moving from one place to another without stable housing, according to a press release.

Jefferson County Genealogical Society (JCGS) presents a conversation, “Where in the World Did I Come From?” 9:30-11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6. The event is free.

Community members can learn about where to access family records, ask questions and more.
