Northwind Reading Series

At 7 p.m. May 9, the Northwind Reading Series will feature Lorraine Ferra and Sally Green. The readings will be held at Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., Port Townsend.

Ferra has been a poet-in-residence through state arts councils across the country. She is a recipient of a Utah State Arts Council Award in poetry and a Westigan Review Award selected by John Haines. She is the author of two chapbook collections and “Between Darkness & Trust,” a recent MoonPath Press publication.

Green, a poet, printer, book designer and calligrapher, is the long-time co-publisher of the award-winning Brooding Heron Press and was a 2017 recipient of an Artist Trust GAP grant.

Under pressure

As part of its new Teen Initiative, the Mandala Center for Change presents “UnderPressure," an interactive theatre performance and community dialogue on teen overwhelm, featuring the Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble.

There will be one performance at 4 p.m. May 10th at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend. Admission is free.

Informed and created by the experiences of teens, this Forum Theatre event invites the audience to grapple with the phenomenon of teen pressure and explore solutions, according to a news release.

“Young people’s voices are often not taken seriously,” said Hannah Bahls, 17, a member of Poetic Justice. “The content of this play came from our real life experiences of overwhelm and stress and it shows the real pressures we are under. It also celebrates our creative and insightful ideas.”

Created by Augusto Boal, Theatre of the Oppressed is a form of popular community-based education that uses theater as a tool for critical thinking and social change, according to the release.

Originally developed out of Boal’s work with peasant and worker populations, it is now used all over the world for social and political activism, conflict resolution, community building, and government legislation.

Now in its 18th season, Port Townsend’s Poetic Justice Theatre Ensemble is a multi-ethnic, multi-generational troupe of local actor-activists who use interactive theatre as a tool for awareness and social change.

The Poetic Justice’s Teen Initiative is funded in part by the Port Townsend Arts Commission.

Mutineers and the Reverend Doctor

The Mutineers and the Reverend Doctor will perform May 12 at the Cellar Door in Port Townsend.

The Mutineers are a twangy rock duo that blends the influences of Johnny and June with John Doe and Exene, and a bit of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, according to a news release. Since re-forming in Portland, Oregon as a two-piece in 2016, The Mutineers have completed four national tours, performing over 200 times across 28 states.

They take the stage at 8 p.m.

Reverend Doctor, based in Los Angeles, is an uplifting and “defiantly” positive soul pop act which aims to connect people and build community through music that moves both mind and feet.
